My friend K. has a boxful of old family Bibles which mostly, are in awful shape. The only reason she is keeping them is because of the births/deaths/marriages recorded in them. She has wanted for some time to "cannibalize" the records--just remove them--and get rid of the remains of the old Bibles, sans family records, in a respectful manner. None of them have any used book value as far as she can tell.

We were talking about the problem with old Bibles--yeah, they are old moldy books, and they are not idols...but she wants to still maintain some respect in their destruction b/c of the years of prayer and study and family they represent. We were talking about doing something along the lines of how the Boy/Girl Scouts retire and burn old flags...maybe make a little short 5 minute home service around the act, then burn them and throw the ashes, symbolizing the Bible's spread throughout the world.

Does anyone know if anyone has crafted any verbiage for such a purpose? I'd love to see it and think of how K. and her husband and I can do this "Bible-retiring ceremony."
